The front page of the April 2009 issue reports the latest US Hogs and Pigs data and how the US herd has tumbled.  Page 2 reviews statistics compiled by the USDA on the Chinese pig industry – production and trade. Page 3 describes the Global Pig Price cycle as “on the edge”. The rise and fall of Hungary’s pig sector is described on page 4. EU prices on page 5 do not look like they belong to a Single Market. Canada’s pork exports are still rising on the next page whilst page 7 shows that US pork exports started the year with a hike. The full year’s trade data for 2008 allow a summary of the import/export performance of the Australian industry on page 8. Page 9 notes that Japan’s pork imports have risen across the board in 2008. South Korea’s trade data at the start of 2009 show a big fall in imports.

News in Short on page 10 covers; a new form of MRSA (ST 398) may be spreading from farm animals to humans in the UK, Denmark overtakes the Netherlands as the biggest exporter of weaners in the EU, Russian imports of pigmeat, New Zealand’s pork imports, the signing of the EU-South Korea FTA, and Japanese stocks of pigmeat.  The back page sets out Company News on; Danish Crown as it makes some workers redundant and its recent price offer to farmers, and Miratorg’s new distribution centre in Kaliningrad. Pig prices are also tabulated in the Global Price Monitor on the back page with prices for 17 countries.
