Page 1 of the March 2009 issue reports the results of Statistics Canada on the Canadian breeding herd – it falls again. Polish pig farming is decimated according to the charts and table on page 2.  Global pig prices mark time on page 3 but we predict that the “compass needle is swinging round” for prices. The BPEX/Interpig review of costs and productivity from 2007 data provide an insight into competitiveness on page 4. On page 5 EU pig prices stabilise. Page 6 describes rising Canadian pork exports. The USA's pork exports are also seen to maintain their increases on page 7.  Page 9 presents data for the Japanese market for pork – imports rise over 2008. In contrast, South Korea’s imports decline. News in Short on page 10 covers; Danish Crown’s new production facility in Jonkoping, UK pork exports, Czech meat production, Russian meat production, Dutch pig numbers, and Chinese pigmeat imports. Company information on the back page covers; the new company formed by Manitoba Pork Marketing and the SPI Marketing Group, and Smithfield Foods’ restructuring plan and its Q2 fiscal 2010 results. Global Price Monitor which reports prices for 17 countries is also on the back page.
