The front page of the February 2009 issue reports a decline in Denmark’s pig breeding herd as recorded by the latest Danish pig census data. The US Hogs and Pigs report on page 2 shows that the US breeding herd fell in 2008. Our forecast on page 3 indicates that although the upward phase of the pig price cycle will last another few months prices will move into a downward phase by June/July. On page 4 we review Tulip Ltd – Danish Crown’s UK company. EU pig prices appear to be stabilising on page 5. German pig meat production is down but exports and imports are up as detailed in the charts and table on page 6. Canada’s strong performance in exports in 2008 is maintained on page 7. US pork exports also continue to rise on page 8. Page 9 describes the trade gap for pigmeat in Australia – exports down 7% and imports up 42%. On the next page we see that the Japanese imported pigmeat market expanded in the first three quarters of 2008 but the South Korean market shows a slight fall by November 2008. News in Short on page 11 covers; Russian livestock and meat production, Brazil’s pork exports, the Russian ban on 10 US meat packers, Smithfield, Farmland Foods, Farmland Distribution, Cargill, Cloverleaf, and Carolina Cold Storage; Czech meat production, Chinese pork imports, and Belarus meat production. Company News on page 12 comes from; Tyson Foods announcement about results for Q1 fiscal 2009, Tyson Foods’ in Brazil contracting with Globoaves, and Canada Pork International’s (CPI) visit to India with the Minister’s trade delegation. The back page is completed with the Global Price Monitor which reports prices for 17 countries. |
